Santa’s Shuffle

Even St. Nick gets sick of jammin’ to the same old tunes. Luckily, a yearly spate of holiday album releases keeps things fresh. Here’s what might make it onto the big guy’s iPod this year.

High Notes

Carrie Underwood’s rendition of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” kicks off a sleigh ride of countrified Christmas classics that ends with Johnny Cash’s version of “Silent Night.”

These 17 light-hearted punk rock songs are a good mix of classic carols like “Angels We Have Heard on High” and original songs like “Santa Claus Is Thumbing to Town.”

Love adds some Motown soul to 11 modern-day holiday classics. Highlights include “Christmas Is the Time to Say ‘I Love You’” and “Please Come Home for Christmas.”

The skillful new arrangements of carols like “The First Noel” and “What Child Is This?” are chock-full of yuletide spirit. And the title track pays tribute to U.S. troops.

Letdowns

Kellie Pickler belting out “Santa Baby.” ’Nuff said.

Let It Snow is a rerelease of an older album, with a new name.

While fun, none of the covers is as good as the original.

No holiday rendition of “Jessie’s Girl.”

Parental Advisory

If you’re looking for Nat King Cole–style crooning, you’ll be disappointed. This is a full-on holiday hoedown.

These may not be the songs your grandma hummed while she made the plum pudding, but chances are she’d still sing along.

There’s a reason Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” is David Letterman’s favorite Christmas song. This CD won’t disappoint him, or her other fans.

Springfield’s changed the tunes around to fit his classic pop-rock style, but the feelings they imbue are as timeless as ever.
