Art of the SaleFrom an Egyptian bronze mummy mask of a cat to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Winnebago Indian sculptures, the 55th Annual Winter Antiques Show at the Park Avenue Armory features the best of the best when it comes to antiques. More than 100 exhibitors — including specialists in American art, Chinese porcelain, Renaissance manuscripts, and much more — save their most unique pieces for this prestigious venue, and a committee of more than 160 experts authenticates each object in the show. This year’s event runs from January 23 to February 1, with the celebrated Opening Night Party taking place on Thursday, January 22. winterantiquesshow.com If you’re looking for something fresh and unique from the art world, don’t miss the 17th Annual Outsider Art Fair, an international gathering of 34 dealers in alternative, self-taught art. Artwork selected for its captivating visual qualities and hair-raisingly unusual aesthetics will be on display at the New York Gift Mart, at 7 W. 34th St., January 9–11. Works by the Swiss artist Aloïse Corbaz, a series of futuristic cityscapes by George Widener, tin and wood constructions by the sculptor David Butler, Violeta C. Raditz’s childhood drawings, and an exhibition on Janet Sobel (the untrained artist whose work inspired Jackson Pollack) make this a can’t-miss event for art lovers. sanfordsmith.com ![]() ![]() Cleveland
Up in LightsCircumnavigating the globe isn’t quite as difficult today as it was when Jules Verne wrote Around the World in 80 Days in 1872. But award-winning playwright Mark Brown has managed to capture the story’s original excitement in a new theatrical production. Over the course of two hours, a cast of five actors portrays nearly 40 characters and covers 24,000 miles — working on one simple stage that starts as a tearoom in London and becomes the site of raging typhoons and blinding blizzards. The production runs January 9–February 1 at the Cleveland Playhouse. Continental is an official sponsor of the Cleveland Playhouse. clevelandplayhouse.com ![]() ![]() Houston
Mini MonkeysThe cotton-top tamarin may be small (average weight is one pound), but it’s got major problems. Native only to Colombia, the tiny tamarin has become an endangered species due to deforestation. A lecture at the Houston Zoo on January 22 explains what one group is doing to help. Rosemira Guillen, director of Proyecto Tití, will discuss the group’s efforts to create economic incentives to benefit both the monkeys and the local community.
