Aligning of the FestivalsOn March 20, the date of the vernal equinox, the plaza fronting the Great Lakes Science Center becomes the canvas for a light painting. At 1:19 p.m., the shadow cast by a tall, stately wind turbine will align precisely with one of the pathways laid out in stone at its base. Exactly two hours and 11 minutes later, the shadow lines up with another path, tracking the sun’s arc across the sky. The site also features a sculpture consisting of 4,440 100-watt bulbs cast in concrete, representing the average American household’s annual electricity consumption. Worth seeing any day, Windworks commissioned by Cleveland Public Art is a permanent installation, open to the public year-round. More than 200 entries from around the world screen morning, noon, and night at Tower City Cinemas in downtown Cleveland, March 616. When the lights go up, there are film forums, Q&A sessions with actors and directors, and discussion groups. Continental is the official airline of the festival. 216.623.3456; clevelandfilm.org Things can get sticky in Chardon, Ohio, during the Geauga County Maple Festival, March 2730, when volunteers make syrup in the log cabin on the town square. Get some that’s still warm from the stir booth on pancakes in the breakfast tent, or bid on a jug of the sweet stuff during the auction. maplefestival.com — Laura Taxel ![]()

Ewww, Gross!“Everything you ever wanted to know About Creepy-Crawlies but Were Afraid to Ask” could be the title for the Houston Zoo’s chat with Ray Mendez on March 20. The roach wrangler for the film Creepshow is obsessed with insects and small animals, especially the naked mole rat, a blind African rodent that has burrowed its way to popularity at the Houston Zoo. The seasoned entomologist will compare mole rats’ social tics with those of wasps, termites, and ants. Stay around for the question-and-answer session to learn how he got ants to fetch a phone for a Fujitsu ad and roaches to ride cats bareback in MTV’s Joe’s Apartment. 713.533.6500; houstonzoo.com If you think the Dewey decimal system numbers were too long, imagine the digits for the fine on a book that’s 113 years overdue. But that’s only the opening chapter of Glen Berger’s Underneath the Lintel, an anything-but-dusty mystery at the Alley Theatre about a librarian who tries to track down the offender. Big Time Under the Big TopManhattan’s Pier 94, at 12th Avenue, on the Hudson River, hasn’t seen much opulence since the beautiful people stopped traveling by ocean liner. But that changes on March 15 and 16 when the Pier Antiques Show comes to town. Five hundred vendors from across the United States bring the best in furniture, jewelry, glass, art, and our personal favorite, vintage eyewear. 212.255.0020; stellashows.com The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is the granddaddy of the big tops, and one of its highlights is certainly the Circus Parade. When the circus train hits New York, usually around midnight, the whole gang strolls to Madison Square Garden, led by the elephants waddling along to great applause. The Greatest Show on Earth is at New Jersey’s Izod Center March 59, Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum March 1216, and Madison Square Garden March 20April 5. ringling.com David McDonough
